Best Road Trips to Take in Rajasthan

Feb 11, 2025 Best Road Trips to Take in Rajasthan

1. Udaipur to Kumbhalgarh: A Journey Through Majestic Forts

Rajasthan is known for its grand palaces and forts, and a road trip from Udaipur to Kumbhalgarh is a perfect way to witness the state's rich heritage. The journey takes you through serene landscapes and historic villages, with the stunning Kumbhalgarh Fort awaiting you at the end. The fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its massive walls and breathtaking views of the Aravalli hills.

During my trip, I drove through winding roads lined with lush greenery and encountered local villages where people still live in traditional mud houses. Reaching Kumbhalgarh at sunset, I was captivated by the golden glow on the fort walls, a memory that stayed with me long after I left.

2. Jaipur to Jodhpur: The Pink City to the Blue City

From the colorful streets of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, head west towards Jodhpur, also known as the Blue City. The road trip is filled with cultural landmarks, including the Amber Fort and the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. The contrast between Jaipur’s pink architecture and Jodhpur’s blue buildings is striking and provides a great backdrop for a road trip.

On my journey, I stopped at several roadside dhabas (local eateries) for authentic Rajasthani food like dal baati churma. The experience of tasting traditional dishes while driving through rural landscapes made this road trip even more enjoyable.

3. Bikaner to Jaisalmer: Exploring the Golden Desert

If you’re seeking adventure in the heart of the Thar Desert, a road trip from Bikaner to Jaisalmer is a must. The path takes you through desert dunes and small, isolated villages. Jaisalmer, often referred to as the Golden City, is known for its golden sandstone architecture, including the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort.

I vividly remember driving across the vast desert, the heat shimmering on the horizon. Once in Jaisalmer, I explored the intricate havelis and enjoyed a camel safari under the stars, an unforgettable experience in the desert.

4. Pushkar to Ajmer: A Spiritual Route in Rajasthan

The road trip from Pushkar to Ajmer is perfect for those seeking a spiritual journey. Pushkar is famous for its sacred lake and the Brahma Temple, while Ajmer is home to the revered Ajmer Sharif Dargah. This short road trip offers a chance to connect with the spiritual heritage of Rajasthan.

During my trip, I experienced the tranquility of Pushkar’s lakeside and visited the Dargah in Ajmer, where pilgrims from across the country gather to seek blessings. The drive itself is peaceful, with scenic views of the Aravalli hills.

5. Mount Abu Road Trip: A Cool Escape in Rajasthan

Escape the desert heat with a road trip to Mount Abu, the only hill station in Rajasthan. The route takes you through winding roads and lush greenery, leading to cool temperatures and breathtaking views. Mount Abu offers a mix of natural beauty and cultural landmarks, such as the Dilwara Temples and Nakki Lake.

On my visit to Mount Abu, I enjoyed a serene boat ride on Nakki Lake and hiked to the Sunset Point to watch the stunning view of the sun setting behind the hills. The contrast between the desert and the cool mountain air made this trip particularly refreshing.

6. Rajasthan Desert Road Trip: Exploring the Thar Desert

For those wanting to experience the heart of Rajasthan, a road trip through the Thar Desert is an essential adventure. Start your journey in Jodhpur and head to the desert, passing through villages, sand dunes, and camel caravans. The vast, barren beauty of the desert is awe-inspiring, and you’ll have the opportunity to visit remote fortresses and interact with locals who have adapted to life in the harsh environment.

I took a jeep safari through the desert dunes, and it was one of the most thrilling parts of my trip. We visited a remote village where I learned about desert life and the traditional ways of farming and herding in such a harsh climate.

7. Explore More: Hidden Gems of Rajasthan

While the popular cities and forts of Rajasthan are well worth visiting, the state is also home to many hidden gems that can only be accessed by road. Explore remote villages, secret lakes, and lesser-known forts that reveal the true essence of Rajasthan. If you’re an off-the-beaten-path traveler, these are the places where you’ll experience the authentic side of Rajasthan.

During one of my road trips, I stumbled upon a beautiful lake surrounded by hills, where locals gathered to celebrate a traditional festival. It was a moment of cultural immersion that I’ll never forget.
