Veer Bhoomi stands as a tribute to India's legendary and visionary Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi In 1991, India lost one of its most dynamic and visionary Prime Ministers, a third-generation supremacist from the Nehru-Gandhi family, Rajiv Gandhi was India's youngest Prime Minister when he took office in 1984. He passed away in 1991. Veer Bhoomi ('Land of the Brave') is a monument dedicated to him that stands near the monuments of Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent leaders of the country. An extraordinary leader Born in 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was the eldest son of Indira Gandhi and the grandson of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. While a college student in England, he fell in love with an Italian woman, Sonia Maino, whom he eventually married. Despite his family's illustrious political heritage, he chose to keep his distance, working as an airline pilot and leading a quiet family life with his wife and children Rahul and Priyanka. Destiny Calling Contrary to Rajeev's expectations, he had other plans for life. His younger brother Sanjay, who was active in public life, died tragically in a plane crash in 1980, aged just 33. Reluctantly, the elder brother was forced into politics and followed a short but eventful career. Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 and Rajiv soon became the in-charge of the Congress party. The sympathy wave won a landslide victory in the general elections and he completed a full term that ended in 1989, becoming the youngest Prime Minister India had ever seen. murder Two years later, on 21 May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by an LTTE militant in Sriperumpattur, Tamil Nadu. As he bent down to touch Gandhi's feet, Chavera blew himself up and was killed. It was a dark end for a great leader who only reluctantly agreed to become a politician. memorial Veer Bhoomi, accessible from the Ring Road, is a memorial not far from the memorials of Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Like the man, the monument is simple and uncluttered. In the middle of an open green space is a large rock-carved lotus surrounded by 46 smaller lotuses representing his lifetime. To signify Rajiv Gandhi's commitment as a leader who represented the whole of India, the lotuses are surrounded by rocks from different parts of the country. Open throughout the year, the monument is a must-visit place in Delhi. Come pay tribute to a great servant of our nation at Veer Land!

It is a place where respected individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation are laid to rest. The term "Veer Bhumi" translates to "Land of the Brave" and is used as an honorific for such leaders. "Veer Bhumi" is often associated with the cremation site of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, located in Delhi. It's a place where people can pay their respects and remember the leader's contributions to the country.

The Vir Bhumi is a memorial dedicated to the former Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi who was assassinated in 1991. The memorial features a sculptural group of lotus flowers, which you wouldn’t know was a memorial except for the wall of honour with a biography of Gandhi. There’s also a second wall with a portrait of Gandhi amongst the general public in bronze relief The memorial is situated close to many other Samadhis inside the memorial park including that of Mahatma Gandhi, and the mother of Rajiv, Indira. The memorial is somewhat innocuous looking, but for its proximity to that of the 2 aforementioned memorials. I wouldn’t go out of the way to see this unless you’re already visiting Raj Ghat.

The man who first dreamt of a New India and gave his life for his dream lies here. A beautiful Samadhi which lotus blooms depicting the many who come together to achieve a goal.
